Parker Variant Adjustable Safety Razor - Graphite

The Variant is a long awaited update to the Merkur Progress. In my opinion it is at least as good a performer as the Progress with a more attractive design. Of course that weird little plastic knob has been replaced with a piece that fits the overall design. The Variant is much less than half the price of available modified versions of the Progress.

This was a gift from my wife and it is so good that it has replaced my Merkur Mergress. The fit, finish and quality of the Variant is top notch. The shave itself is smooth and the blade alignment has not been in an issue (unlike on my Mergress.) Parker seems to have improved its quality in recent years and the Variant is a very good example of that. I got the black-handled version and it is very sharp looking.

First off, I'm a sucker for adjustable razors. Before picking up the Variant, I already had 7 different models of adjustable razors. I learned to shave using an adjustable in the 70's. This is easily one of the best of the lot. It takes the best features of the Progress and adds a superior handle and adjustment dial and the result is a sweet razor. I picked up the black handle model and have had a week of superior shaves. This makes for my 3rd Parker brand razor and definitely not my last.

Just received my adjustable Parker razor and I have,to say that this was the best $57 I have spent on any razor. It is extremely well built and it shavess like a dream, as well as any high-end de razor I own.. anyone who wants a great shave from very mild to aggressive needs to purchase this razor. Do not hesitate just buy it!!!

At first glance, you can tell a lot of thought went into this razor. First off, it is just a beauty to behold. Satin finish, anodized knurling on the handle AND the adjusting dial. This is a major improvement over both the Merkur Progress and the Mergress which when wet are difficult to grasp and turn. This razor is solid, and weighty yet balanced and feels good in hand. I think the handle length is just right; not too long, not too short. For my first shave, I had a three day growth of beard (medium coarse). My prep was a hot shower, followed by using Lubriderm as a preshave. My soap was Razorock Son of Zeus, with matching AS and balm. I used a fresh Gillette Silver Blue blade. Dial settings on the razor are 1-5. I did a 3-2-1 dial down for this first shave. On setting 3 my first pass WTG was buttery smooth. For my second pass XTG on setting 2 I noticed a difference in tugging on each side of the blade...interesting. Final pass, on setting 1 was very mild and uneventful. I tend to nick myself regularly on the right side of my neck and this time was no exception. This occurred on setting 3 so *note to self: dial it down on the first pass in sensitive areas. More shaves will be necessary under different conditions to further evaluate this razor. Overall, I would give this razor two thumbs up given the price point of $57.00 (currently out of stock). However, I would not say it is qualitatively superior to my 1959 Gillette Fatboy in terms of the shave it delivers. About on par with my other adjustables. But the fit and finish is second to none and this alone will appeal to many DE enthusiasts.

I found the Parker Variant well balanced and the adjustments are spot on. The knurled handle & metal adjustment knob were a nice addition. I would have given it five stars but the finish on the head of the razor I received could have been better.

What an excellent addition to my collection! The weight behind this razor is impressive and I really enjoyed the balance. The razor is easy to load, gives amazing audible feedback and really provides a great shave. It's highly efficient, so two passes allowed for a DFS and the third (ATG) created a BBS shave. I would highly recommend this razor. I also have to commend Super Safety Razors not only for their great customer service and quick turnaround with shipping the item, but also for their impressive communication. I have been keeping my eye on a razor that has had its release (and pricing) teased for quite some time now. I had to manually go back and check their website. During that time, I discovered SSR's Instagram page and found out about The Parker Variant. There were updates and directions to sign up for the company's newsletter. Soon after, an email was pushed that this razor was available and I was able to order and purchase online through my mobile device. Needless to say, my dollars will not go towards the other razor and company. I am thrilled with owning this razor and will not look back.

I just completed my first head shave using The Variant and I am blown away! Never in my life have I not needed to go back for a touch up pass, until tonight. The Variant is amazing! It got parts smooth on the first try that I normally really have to work at. what a treat this razor is to shave with. I had no trouble finding the correct angel to hold the razor, it felt so natural. traditional wet shaving and collecting razors is a hobby of mine. I have many kinds of razors from many brands, so I know this razor is going to be a big hit and a must have for any shave den rotation!
